The Hearing is Hereby Opened – or Maybe Not – #2

Jack makes it on time again – maybe Wendy will be back soon – –

The continuing story of my hearing problem. Following the diagnosis that the loss in my right ear was permanent I learned to position myself so that my good left ear was always in the best place. So, when playing and or singing I always made sure anyone else was to my left. In restaurants or in company at home I also always made sure of that too.

Then my old singing buddy Barbara, on a visit, explained how she had a hearing aid and I should get one. So off I went to the local audiologist and dropped a lump of money for a matching pair (it seemed I couldn’t get just one!). The right one didn’t seem much help but together they definitely did.

I went back to the audiologist every few months to get checked and have the aids cleaned. Then my left ear went deaf again! It was impacted wax so – off to a specialist with tweezers this time and another bill!

Then during the pandemic and lock down I didn’t have much need for the technology so didn’t use them for nearly three years. No gigs, no socializing and not much meeting up.
But a few weeks ago we did have a gig – a house concert. So I gave the aids a good clean, fitted new batteries and new filters. Off we went and in the morning ahead of the evening concert I put them in. An hour later I went completely deaf in my left ear. I seems that when I put the left one in I pushed wax down against the ear drum! The rest of the day was spent lying on my side with peroxide and ear drops alternating with warm water syringing until finally I got some hearing back.

The following day we drove back home and my hearing was going in and out all the way, but, on getting home I gave the ear another syringe and it’s been perfect ever since.
I wonder if anyone else has experienced similar – ring any bells?
