Not a lot of blogging today because it was the annual Tri-State Gospel Sing. Here’s a few photos of the day.
“HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING” WITH OUR FRIENDS ELIZABETH AND GRACE.
FASTEST WAY TO START A RIOT OF LAUGHTER AT THE GOSPEL SING: INTRODUCE A HYMN AS “CATHOLIC”
SO WE KNEW IMMEDIATELY THAT THESE PEOPLE WERE FROM OUT OF TOWN…..

Hey girl. None of the photos actually showed up. 😦
I think Catholic hymns are pretty much all I know. I’d best avoid gospel sings!
We meant catholic in the sense of ecumenical, but the audience did not receive it that way. Catholics are few and far between in these mountains, although we used to have a lot of Italian communities in the coal camps. An area of BSG is known as (wait for it) Little Italy Bottom. Ah, for the days….
What songs did you sing ( ecumenical) that bothered them?
Nothing bothered them; they just laughed at our introduction. Lessee…. we sang:
My Song is Love Unknown
All Creatures of our God and King
We Have an Anchor
The Magnificat
To Be a Pilgrim
and with our friends
My Shepherd Will Supply My Need
How Can I Keep from Singing
They That Go Down to the Sea in Ships
Goodnight (the Sankey hymn)
Well, as long as you didn’t use any Latin I reckon it’s okay. I wonder if there were any German Catholic settlements in that area (like my own ancestors from the hills of south-eastern Ohio,,,or the ones in Lake Wobegon).
My Daddy sang at some of these singings. He went to be with the Lord June 23, 1960. Jenny Stallard Boggs. ❤
